Summary of Activities that Continue

The Indian Health Service (IHS) received advance appropriations for FY 2024; therefore, the majority of IHS-funded programs will remain funded and operational in the event of a lapse of appropriation.  Advance appropriations, third party collections, and carryover balances, including from supplemental COVID-19 appropriations, will continue to fund the provision of care by the Indian Health Service, Tribal Health Programs, and Urban Indian Organizations.  Facilities construction projects supported with previously appropriated funds will also continue.

Summary of Contingency Staffing Plan

In the event of a lapse of appropriation, 15,086 (100%) of IHS staff will be retained and exempt.

Exempt Staff:

A total of 15,086 (100%) IHS staff will be exempt and paid from advance, multi-year, or supplemental appropriations, third party insurance collections (for example Medicare and Medicaid), or carryover balances.

Excepted Staff:

None.
