Update or Renew an IRB Registration

An institution or organization that has previously registered an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or been assigned an IORG number should complete an IRB registration update/renewal application.

You will need to create a submission number to access the IRB registration update/renewal application. To obtain a submission number you will need to know three things:

  1. Your institution or organization’s seven-digit IORG number.
  2. The last name of your organization’s Head Official on the most recent registration on file with OHRP.
  3. The last name of the IRB Chairperson on the most recent registration on file with OHRP.

Please follow the instructions below:

  1. Visit http://ohrp.cit.nih.gov/efile/IrbRnwStart.aspx
  2. Click “I need a submission number”
  3. Enter in the fields
    1. Seven-digit IORG number,
    2. Senior Officer/Head Official last name as of the most recent registration on file with OHRP
    3. IRB chairperson last name as of the most recent registration on file with OHRP.
    4. Your email address,
    5. Create a password with a mix of upper- and lower-case letters and numbers or special characters, and
    6. Confirm the password.
  4. Click the “Submit” button
  5. Once you receive the submission number in your email:
    1. Repeat step 1 above.
    2. Then click “I have a submission number”.
    3. Enter the submission number and the password
    4. Click the “Submit” button
  6. Your organization’s IRB registration records will be presented to be updated/renewed.
  7. Follow the step-by-step instructions for updating the IORG IRB registration information.

An initial IRB registration and an IRB registration update/renewal expires 3 years from the date of acceptance by OHRP. An IRB registration can be updated/renewed at any time.

An IRB-operating institution or organization (IORG) must update its IRB registration if either of the following circumstances apply:

  1. Within 90 days after changes regarding the contact person who provided the IRB registration information or the IRB chairperson.
  2. For IRBs registered with FDA, within 30 days after an IRB decides to review additional types of FDA-regulated products (e.g., to review device studies if it only reviewed drug studies previously) or to discontinue reviewing clinical investigations regulated by FDA

An IORG must also notify OHRP in writing at IRBorFWA@hhs.gov of its decision to disband a registered IRB that it is operating within 30 days after permanent cessation of the IRB's review of HHS-conducted or –supported research.

OHRP generally recommends that an institution or organization should also update its IRB registration within 90 days of a change in the membership roster if that IRB reviews research conducted or supported by HHS. Whenever an IRB registration is updated or renewed, the IORG should ensure that all information on the application is current and accurate.
