NVAC Public Member: Stephen B. Rinderknecht, D.O.

NVAC Public Member | Term: 2/10/2022 – 2/9/2026

Stephen B. Rinderknecht, D.O., received his B.S. in microbiology from Colorado State University (1982) and D.O. from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences (1988). He completed an internship in 1989 and a pediatric residency in 1991 at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. After a year as a fellow of Pediatric Infectious Disease at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Dr. Rinderknecht joined Iowa Health Physicians (now UnityPoint Health) in Des Moines, Iowa. He served as an assistant professor of Pediatrics at Des Moines University, and serves as an attending physician for the pediatric residency program at Blank Children’s Hospital. He has served as the Associate Medical Director of Central Iowa UnityPoint Clinic Pediatrics for six years and currently chairs the UnityPoint Clinic Vaccine Oversight Committee.

Dr. Rinderknecht’s clinical trial experience reflects his special interest in pediatric infectious disease. He has been a principal investigator on 11 different clinic trails in vaccine safety and efficacy including rotavirus, meningococcal conjugate, and new combination vaccines. A representative listing of Dr. Rinderknecht’s publications includes a variety of co-authored scientific articles related to disease prevention and management.

Dr. Rinderknecht routinely presents at local, state, and national conferences, including the Nurse Practitioner Conference, New School Nurse Orientation, Iowa Statewide Immunization Conference, and the Upper Midwest Osteopathic Conference. Dr. Rinderknecht is board certified as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics and is actively involved in numerous professional associations. He currently serves on the Immunization Task Force, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) Immunization Advisory Board, and the IDPH Antibiotic Resistance Task Force.
