NVAC Public Member: Melissa Martinez, MD

NVAC Public Member | Term: 2/7/2017 – 2/7/2020

Melissa Martinez is a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM). She was a Vaccine Science Fellow with the AAFP in 2015, and she currently teaches evidence-based medicine at UNM.

She has given multiple presentations on vaccines over the years to students, residents, nurses, and physicians. Audio Digest has provided one of these presentations to a national audience. She recently completed a study to determine barriers to vaccination for patients who are sent to pharmacy for vaccines. She is also co-chair to the New Mexico Immunization Practice Advisory Council. This multi-disciplinary group includes physicians, nurses, health plans and pharmaceutical representatives, who are interested in improving rates of immunizations in the state. In 2015, she advocated for legislation to sustain universal purchase in New Mexico. Dr. Martinez is very well versed in the science and policy of immunizations.
