Priority Measures

The implementation of the National Adult Immunization Plan (NAIP) demands regular monitoring and documentation of progress, challenges, and opportunities. Therefore, baseline indicators were selected to measure progress in the NAIP and will inform future implementation and quality improvement efforts.

Goal 1

Goal 1 infrastructure - 39% of adults were vaccinated against seasonal influenza, annually (2013). 70% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 62% of health care personnel were vaccinated against seasonal influenza, annually (2013). 90% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 52% of pregnant women were vaccinated against seasonal influenza, annually (2013).
Goal 1 infrastructure - 60% of adults aged 65+ were vaccinated against seasonal influenza, annually (2013). 90% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 21% of non-institutionalized high-risk adults aged 18-64 were vaccinated against seasonal influenza, annually (2013). 60% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 66% of non-institutionalized adults in long term care or nursing homes were vaccinated against seasonal influenza, annually (2013).
Goal 1 infrastructure - 24% of adults 60 and older were vaccinated against zoster, annually (2006). 30% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 64% of health care personnel 19+ were vaccinated against hepatitis b (2008). 90% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 8% of internists and 36% of family physicians recorded information on adult vaccinations in state and regional IIS (CDC, 2012). 50% in 2020.
Goal 1 infrastructure - 28% of surveyed pharmacists submitted adult vaccination data to an IIS, (CDC, 2013). 60% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - 25% of adults age 19 and older had one or more immunizations recorded in ISS (CDC, 2012). 50% in 2020. Goal 1 infrastructure - Of adult health care providers who have identified an adverse event following immunizations, 17% of providers reported one or more events to VAERS.

Goal 2

Goal 2 Access - 85% of states and territories allowed pharmacists to administer routinely recommended vaccines for adults 19+ without a patient-specific prescription (2013). 100% in 2020. Goal 2 Access - 20% of internists and 31% of family physicians stocked vaccines routinely recommended for adults (CDC, 2012). 60% in 2020. Goal 2 Access - 20% of state Medicaid programs provide coverage of all ACIP/CDC recommended vaccinations for adults and prohibit cost-sharing. 100% in 2020.

Goal 3

Goal 3 Demand - 45% of surveyed adults believe that they are recommended to receive a flu vaccine (CDC, 2012). 75% in 2020. Goal 3 Demand - 45% of surveyed adults report receiving a provider recommendation for flu vaccine (CDC, 2012). 90% in 2020. Goal 3 Demand - 29% of internists and 32% of famity physicians report assessing vaccination status at every visit (CDC, 2012).
Goal 3 Demand - Increase the percentage of adults who are aware that certain vaccines are recommended for them. Goal 3 Demand - Increase the percentage of pregnant women who reported receiving the influenza and Tdap vaccines during pregnancy.  

Goal 4

Goal 4 Innovate - Increase the number of vaccines in clinical development (phase II or III clinical trials) with an expected adult indication. Goal 4 Innovate - Increase the number of vaccines on CDC-contracted vaccines pricelist that include a 2D barcode on the unit of use or primary vaccine product (e.g., vials, syringes).
