OHRP Director’s Biography

Molly Klote, MD

Molly Klote, Director, headshot

Dr. Klote is the Director, OHRP since Oct 2024.  Dr. Klote brings over 35 years of distinguished military and civilian federal service to her role at OHRP, where she focuses on advancing human research protections. She is a proud graduate of James Madison University in Virginia and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Maryland, where she earned her MD. She did her internship, residency, and fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.  She is board-certified in Allergy and Immunology.

In her last assignment as a career physician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Klote served as the Director of the Army Human Research Protections Office in the Office of the Army Surgeon General. In this capacity, she oversaw all Army policy and compliance related to academic, biomedical, socio-behavioral, and engineering research.  She retired from the Army in 2018 and accepted a position as a Senior Executive at the Department of Veteran Affairs.   She spent six years as the research policy, regulatory, and education lead for the Veterans Health Administration, the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States.  During that time, she oversaw the implementation of a single research review platform for all 110 hospitals with research programs, created dashboards to support the oversight of the programs, created and implemented an electronic determination aid, and oversaw the creation of a compendium of State and Tribal laws impacting research, among other accomplishments.

Additionally, Dr. Klote has directed two major research program offices, chaired three Institutional Review Boards, led a Research Scientific Review Board, has conducted and published research, and has been a research participant in a clinical trial.

Dr. Klote’s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to enhancing human research protections have significantly advanced healthcare and research initiatives throughout her career.
