May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month!
This month is an opportunity to recognize the many ways AA and NHPI history, culture, leadership, and innovation have influenced all facets of life in the United States. This annual observance celebrates the diverse cultures, languages, and religions of AA and NHPI communities and individuals.
This year, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority (OMH) is observing AA and NHPI Heritage Month through its theme, Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections, which calls on each of us to understand how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances (known as social determinants of health, or SDOH) of AA and NHPI populations impact their overall health.
Data shows that health outcomes for AA and NHPI populations are impacted by a range of both shared and unique SDOH factors. About Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month! This annual observance, established in 1992, is a time to celebrate AA and NHPI individuals and communities in the United States. Although we celebrate the contributions of AA and NHPI populations together, it’s important to understand and acknowledge the vast diversity of these groups.
Be the Source for Better Health for AA and NHPI Communities
This year, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority (OMH) is observing AA and NHPI Heritage Month through its theme, Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections, which calls on each of us to understand how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances (known as social determinants of health, or SDOH) of AA and NHPI populations impact their overall health.
Health outcomes for AAand NHPIs are impacted by a range of both shared and unique SDOH factors, including access to quality health care, social and cultural barriers, neighborhood and built environments, and financial resources. For example:
- Both AA and NHPI youth were less likely to receive preventive health care and dental services than youth in other racial and ethnic groups.
- NHPI households experience higher rates of food insecurity than some other racial and ethnic groups, including Asian Americans.
- Asian American adults are least likely among all racial and ethnic groups to report that their health care provider always involves them in health care decisions.
By addressing SDOH through a comprehensive approach, we can work to advance health equity, reduce health disparities, and Be the Source for Better Health for AA and NHPI populations.
Take Action
Public health and community-based organizations can take steps to start improving the health of AA and NHPI communities by addressing SDOH factors. You can leverage these steps to Be the Source for Better Health in your communities:
Convene
Bring together members of your community and trusted organizations to identify concerns specific to AA and NHPI communities and individuals.
Consider
Collect and utilize multiple sources of data and information, including public health data, to help develop strategies that can benefit you and your community. It’s important that data collection practices measure and reflect the diversity of AA and NHPI experiences.
Commit
Committing to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) is one way to help eliminate health inequities. Effective, equitable, and respectful care and services that are responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages, economic and environmental circumstances, and health literacy levels are essential to close the gap in health outcomes for AA and NHPI populations.
Collaborate
Work with trusted partners to address the impact of SDOH on AA and NHPI populations and to find innovative solutions that can be put into action. Mobilize partners to develop and implement strategies addressing health disparities and long-standing inequities in AA and NHPI communities.
