CMS Manual System: Pub. 100-05 Medicare Secondary Payer
The current version of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) transaction and code sets contains individual relationship codes that are not recognized by the CMS’ Common Working File (CWF). Through this change, CMS is issuing a crosswalk that will be used by the shared systems to convert incoming HIPAA individual relationship codes, reported on incoming electronic or direct data entry (DDE) or hard copy claims, to the patient relationship to the insured codes that are recognized by CWF.
