A review of practices and policies regarding Medicare disproportionate share payment determinations led HCFA to conclude that it is necessary to clarify the definition of eligible Medicaid days in Medicare disproportionate share policy and communicate this information to fiscal intermediaries, hospitals, Medicaid State agencies, and Medicaid managed care organizations. This clarification applies to cost reporting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2000.
