Today, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra released the following statement in honor of Women’s History Month, celebrated every year in the United States throughout the month of March, and in recognition of International Day of Women on March 8, 2024:
Throughout our country’s history, women have been at the forefront of activism, progress, innovation – and most especially, science and medicine. Time and time again, women have rallied to create opportunities, mobilized to expand rights, and fought against discrimination. Through their determination and grit, women have strengthened our national character.
For all the incredible contributions that women have made through history, they have also had to contend with constant and unrelenting attacks on their fundamental rights and freedoms. Right now, too many women across the country are contending with unpopular restrictions on their rights to reproductive health care.
While some lawmakers are focused on deepening gaps in access to care, the Biden-Harris Administration remains focused on strengthening the resources available to women. And we will continue to fight until full reproductive rights are restored. Through the Women’s Health Research Initiative, we are also working to deliver cutting-edge solutions that address the unique health needs women face throughout their lives.
Women’s history month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women – including the many hidden figures – who have carried us through the pages of our history books. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate today’s women and girls who are standing on their shoulders and reaching new heights.
President Biden, Vice President Harris, and I are investing in an America that gives women across the country the support they need to build a better future for us all.
