About this Page

The purpose of this page is to provide access to materials from past Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP) trainings and educational events. Materials on this page are organized by event and listed below in order of the date of release. Materials from each event (e.g., PowerPoint slides, tip sheets, Q&A documents) are posted in the files in the Downloads section below. The links for web-based trainings are located within the posted announcement. Providers can browse this training library for topics of interest and use the associated links and downloads to increase their knowledge and train hospice staff on topics pertinent to the HQRP.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Older trainings are moved to the Hospice Quality Reporting Archives webpage when at least some portion of their content is out-of-date. Archived trainings may be helpful to providers for historical reference.

UPDATED RESOURCES AVAILABLE: Data Submission and Provider Reports Web-Based Training

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering an updated web-based training course that provides an overview of the HQRP submission process including the submission of HOPE data to inform the CMS HQRP reports and quality measures (QMs). It also provides valuable information about available reports and resources to assist hospices in reviewing their submitted data to track progress, confirm accuracy, and ensure compliance with the HQRP.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR LIVE HOPE TRAINING: Hospice Outcomes and Patient Evaluation (HOPE) National Implementation Virtual Training Program Course 2: Coding Workshop

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering a live coding workshop on August 5, 2025 which will provide coding practice for items that are new for HOPE, as well as the existing and updated items carried over from the Hospice Item Set (HIS).

NEW RESOURCES AVAILABLE: Hospice Outcomes and Patient Evaluation (HOPE) National Implementation Virtual Training Program Course 1: Didactic Recorded Training Series 

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering a series of five self-paced recorded presentations and corresponding PDFs which highlight items that are new for HOPE, as well as the existing and updated items carried over from the Hospice Item Set (HIS). 

It is highly recommended that all five parts of this didactic course be reviewed prior to attending the coding workshop in August. A registration announcement for the workshop will be sent via the listserv.

NEW RESOURCE AVAILABLE: Introducing the HOPE Tool Web-Based Training

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is offering a web-based training course that provides an overview of the Hospice Outcomes and Patient Evaluation (HOPE) tool and how it relates to the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP) as described in the fiscal year (FY) 2025 Hospice Final Rule. The course is intended for all hospice providers.

The course contains five sections and includes interactive exercises to help you understand and apply the content presented. This 'Train-the-Trainer’ program is the first in a series of trainings about the HOPE tool. More detailed comprehensive training will follow throughout FY2025 as hospices begin to prepare for HOPE implementation and data collection which starts on October 1, 2025 (FY2026). NEW RESOURCE AVAILABLE: HOPE Data Collection Timepoints Explainer Video

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is offering a 4-minute, animated explainer video, Hospice Outcomes and Patient Evaluations (HOPE) Data Collection Timepoints for hospice providers. This video describes HOPE, the timepoints, their data collection timeframes, and introduces the symptom follow-up visit (or SFV), if triggered during a HOPE timepoint. HOPE data collection will be required for the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP) beginning on October 1, 2025 (FY 2026). UPDATED RESOURCE AVAILABLE: Introduction to the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP) Web-Based Training

The Introduction to the HQRP Web-Based Training is a two-part training series for Hospice providers.

Course 1: Getting Started with the HQRP and Public Reporting Provides a general overview of the HQRP and reviews the program’s use of three data sources: The Hospice Item Set (HIS), the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) Hospice Survey, and the Medicare claims. Course 1 contains the following six lessons: 

  • What is the HQRP?
  • HIS and the HIS Manual
  • Timing and Maintenance of the HIS
  • HQRP Claims-Based Quality Measures
  • The CAHPS® Hospice Survey
  • Care Compare and Public Reporting

Course 2: HQRP Data Submissions and Reports Provides an introduction to the HQRP data submission requirements and reports available to providers. Course 2 contains the following six lessons:

  • Getting Ready to Submit the HIS
  • HIS Item Completion
  • Successful Submission and Acceptance of the HIS
  • Identifying and Addressing Errors on the FVR
  • Overview of the HQRP Provider Reports
  • HQRP Useful Websites and Resources

Although the course lessons were designed to be completed in sequential order, you may jump to any topic of interest. Each lesson can be completed at your own pace.
