Independent Living

The Administration on Disabilities (AoD) funds grants that support community living and independence for people with disabilities by providing tools and resources that help ensure dignity, choice, and full participation in society. At the heart of the independent living network are two core programs. The Centers for Independent Living (CIL) program fund awards to community-based organizations that provide direct services to individuals with disabilities, while the Independent Living Services (ILS) program funds states and territories to sustain, expand, and improve independent living services.

Designed and operated by individuals with disabilities themselves, CILs are consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, nonresidential nonprofit agencies providing an array of independent living services.
