Healthy People Initiative

Healthy People 2020

The Office of Population Affairs (OPA) is the lead agency for developing the family planning topic area, which is one of 42 topic areas in Healthy People 2020. Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. The family planning topic area includes 16 objectives. OPA developed the publication, Reproductive Health and Healthy People (457 KB), to highlight the 62 Healthy People 2020 objectives that most directly address reproductive health.

The Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators reflect twelve high-priority health issues and communicate actions that can be taken to address them. They will be used to assess the health of the Nation over the decade, facilitate collaboration across sectors, and motivate action at the national, State, and community levels to improve the health of the U.S. population.

The Healthy People 2020 Reproductive and Sexual Health Leading Health Indicators:

  • Sexually active females aged 15 to 44 years who received reproductive health services in the past 12 months (FP-7.1)
  • Persons living with HIV who know their serostatus (HIV-13)

The Healthy People 2020 Midcourse Review provides a snapshot of progress toward the HP2020 goals and objectives. Read the Family Planning (1.27 MB) topic area chapter of the HP2020 Midcourse Review.
