HHS Ignite: Now Accepting Your Funding Proposals!

We are now accepting applications for this round of HHS Ignite – The Secretary’s StartUp Innovation program. Have an idea worth pursuing? See a problem worth addressing? Need a little bump of support and some air-cover to try something new? HHS Ignite may be a good fit for you. Apply now! Ignite is an internal incubator for new ideas here at the Department. Selected teams are equipped and empowered over a three month period to test out their idea. Ignite teams receive:

  • Access to a network of innovators
  • A suite of tools (technologies) typically not available to staff
  • On-the-job exposure to new methodologies and tools used by successful startup companies
  • Coaches and mentors to advise on your efforts
  • $5,000 to go towards implementing your project idea

As an Ignite Entrepreneur, you and your team will be part of a self-assembled support community of innovators that includes a kick off accelerator program (June 9 – 11), engagement sessions, and periodic mentoring sessions. How cool is that! Just last month we wrapped up the first year of Ignite which supported 13 teams testing ideas on how to transform government. If you’re interested in what’s involved in Ignite or what kinds of projects might be supported, scroll to the bottom of the Ignite webpage and browse the project pages. You’ll see efforts ranging from communications and data management to process and program efficiencies. We’ve made some key upgrades this year based on user feedback One key change involves a focus on the technical guidance and mentorship. In fact we are excited to be partnering this year with the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland and DC I-Corps to carry out this round of HHS Ignite. Edmund Pendleton and Dean Chang are experienced entrepreneurs with in-depth insights and experience with startups. The Academy, a “signature initiative to infuse the University with a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship,” brings technical advising and a proven program structure for iterating toward solution. In addition to having access to the top experts within HHS and the federal government, teams accepted into HHS Ignite will be able to leverage UMD and DC I-Corps staff, resources, and mentorship provided by their network of innovators in the private sector and academia.
