Recruitment, Retention, & Engagement

To be effective, programs must successfully recruit, retain, and engage participants. Recruitment activities involve enrolling teens from the program's target population and retention activities keep them coming back! Both contribute to successful engagement, which occurs when adolescents absorb and internalize program content.

Key Considerations

  • A program's recruitment and retention strategy should be created at the onset of program development along with its implementation plan, and updated frequently.
  • Recruitment, retention, and engagement can be difficult when enrolling vulnerable populations that can be hard to reach.
  • Meet teens "where they are," whether that’s a physical location convenient and familiar to them or through texting or social media.
