Program Summary

Project Overview: The National Indian Youth Leadership Project (NIYLP) will deliver the Venture Beyond Prevention (VBP) curriculum to 9th and 10th grade American Indian students in three counties in New Mexico. VBP is a semester-long program that employs a strengths-based positive youth development approach proven effective in addressing several negative outcomes often associated with American Indian adolescents. Youth will be engaged in a meaningful service-learning project within their communities and attend a 5 to 7-day wilderness camp at the end of the semester. Sexual and reproductive health topics and avoidance strategies include cultural and traditional teachings around healthy relationships. 

Target Population: American Indian male and female 9th and 10th graders

Geographic Area Served (Urbanicity of Community): Gallup, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe, NM (Rural, Urban, and Suburban)
