Program Summary

Project Overview: Kent Intermediate School District will build on existing efforts of the special education Sexual Risk Avoidance Education initiative by evaluating the implementation of SkillFlix, a skill-building online video library, to engage parents and caregivers of cognitively-impaired students in the delivery of sexual health education. SkillFlix will increase family protective factors by engaging adults in what their child is learning in the classroom through the provision of online video modules that are designed to increase parent knowledge of sexual health. The skill-building videos will also seek to increase parents’ and caregivers’ confidence in their ability to communicate with youth about both the risks of teen sex and the strategies to achieve optimal health.

Target Population: Parents of cognitively impaired students in self-contained special education classrooms, ages 10-19

Geographic Area Served (Urbanicity of Community): Kent, Ionia, and Montcalm Counties, MI (Urban, Suburban, Rural)
