Project Description

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will implement the Michigan Adolescent Pregnant and Parenting Program (MI-APPP), which seeks to create an integrated system of care for expectant and parenting teens ages 15-19 years, fathers, and their families. MI-APPP will partner with six organizations operating in some of the state’s highest-need communities (in Berrien, Ingham, Kent, Saginaw, and Wayne Counties) disproportionately impacted by teen births: Berrien County Health Department, Eaton Regional Education Service Agency, Saginaw Intermediate School District, Starfish Family Services, Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency, and Calhoun County Public Health Department. Participating communities will: receive evidence-informed case management through the Adolescent Family Life Program-Positive Youth Development; complete a community needs assessment; provide support services that directly address the needs of expectant and parenting teens; and convene a community steering committee. Through these measures, MI-APPP aims to reduce repeat pregnancies, strengthen access to and completion of secondary education, improve maternal and child health outcomes, and strengthen familial connections and support networks.
