Statement from Secretary Xavier Becerra on Marketplace Open Enrollment
HHS also releases new data showing how Marketplace supports small business owners, entrepreneurs
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra released the following statement today marking the beginning of Marketplace open enrollment. HHS also released new data showing that 3.3 million small business owners and self-employed adults obtained health insurance through the Marketplaces in 2022. That represents, 28 percent of working-age adults who were enrolled that year. The uninsurance rate has dropped by 12 percent for self-employed adults between 2011 and 2022.
“Every American should be able to afford health coverage, regardless of their zip code or income. Because of President Biden and Vice President Harris’s leadership and support, a record number of people are covered. Coverage makes health care more affordable and accessible – and provides peace of mind knowing you and your family can go to the doctor if you need to without breaking your budget.
“Today, as Marketplace Open Enrollment begins for coverage in 2025, HHS is eager and prepared to build on our previous success. Coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplaces continues to rise, with a historic high of 21.4 million people who signed up for a plan in 2024.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris fought for tax credits that have lowered the cost of health care for people purchasing coverage on their own. Unfortunately, this vital tax credit is scheduled to expire at the end of 2025 – unless Congress makes it permanent or at least extends it. To be clear, if you are looking for coverage for 2025, you will still find affordable plans on the Marketplace now. However, Congressional inaction would lead to a future tax increase for struggling families.
“HHS is proud of our efforts to help make health care more affordable, accessible, and equitable, and we will continue this work to the best of our ability. Now is the time to visit HealthCare.gov where you can compare options and choose an affordable, quality plan that best meets your needs.”
