Matthew Bassett is the Assistant Secretary for Legislation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He is a healthcare policy expert with more than 20 years of public policy experience in state and federal government.
Mr. Bassett began his career as a Policy Analyst for the Texas Senate Health Services Committee, where he assisted Chairwoman Jane Nelson on health issues during the 76th Legislative Session and served as liaison with the Governor’s office, legislature, and executive agencies. Mr. Bassett then served as Hospital and Health Facility Development Consultant for the Texas Department of Health, where he supported the Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID) and served as liaison to the state legislature, Texas Department of Health leadership, and other key constituency groups.
Mr. Bassett moved to Washington, D.C., to serve as a Senior Legislative Assistant in the office of Congressman Pete Session. He then served as Congressman Ernie Fletcher’s Deputy Chief of Staff with responsibility for health-related issues coming before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Following Mr. Fletcher’s election as Kentucky Governor, Mr. Bassett joined his Administration as Chief of Staff for the Cabinet of Health and Family Services, serving as the Governor’s senior advisor for health and insurance policy with a focus on modernizing Kentucky’s Medicaid program to better meet patients’ needs.
Mr. Bassett’s private sector experience includes serving as Vice President of Public Policy for DaVita, a nationwide provider of dialysis services, where he led the company’s state public policy team and focused on expanding access to care for patients suffering End Stage Renal Disease. Mr. Bassett then founded Bassett Consulting LLC, offering public policy counsel based on his health care and insurance experience with public and private payors. Most recently, Mr. Bassett served as Senior Vice President at myNEXUS, which focuses on improving care for senior citizens using advanced care management programs and technology, and on the Board of Directors for the Access Tennessee Health Insurance Pool (AccessTN).
Mr. Bassett’s extensive public and private sector experience spans Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance matters as well as specialization in patient access, provider support, and payor policy issues. His senior executive positions also include departmental, staff, and budget management in both state agency and corporate environments.
Mr. Bassett is a graduate of Baylor University and earned a Master’s in Health Care Administration from Trinity University. He now lives in Brentwood, Tennessee with his wife, Stacy, and their son, Matthew Jr.
