Major Actions Taken to Date

  • On Monday April 13, NIH highlighted a new funding opportunity that will support approximately $200 million in large-scale research projects that have a high likelihood of enabling growth and investment in biomedical research and development.  The new Research and Research Infrastructure "Grand Opportunities" (GO), will support high impact ideas that lend themselves to short-term funding and may lay the foundation for new fields of scientific inquiry.
  • On Tuesday, April 14, the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) held its first public listening session, which can be viewed at: http://nmr.rampard.com/fcc/20090414/frame/index.html
  • On Friday, April 17, HHS published guidance regarding technologies and methodologies to secure health information and prevent harm by rendering health information unusable, unreadable, or indecipherable to unauthorized individuals. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act required publication of the guidance by April 18.  This builds on the existing requirements of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, which are unchanged.
  • Cumulative disbursements for ARRA Medicaid FMAP funding total $13.2B through Friday, April 17.
  • OMB completed review of several HHS spending plans, and once necessary documents are prepared, funds will be released or funding opportunities will be made public.

Major Actions Planned

  • We continue to review spending plans and could announce and/or begin releasing funds for additional ARRA programs.
