HARVEY A. K. WHITNEY LECTURE AWARD
Criteria
The Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award shall be given annually, if a recipient is chosen, to an individual of high moral character, good citizenship, and high professional ideals, who has made significant contributions to health-system pharmacy. These contributions shall have been in the form of sustained exemplary service in health-system pharmacy; or, an outstanding single achievement; or, a combination of accomplishments benefiting health-system pharmacy, and through it, humanity and the public health. They may include accomplishments, achievements, or outstanding performance in:
- Health-system pharmacy practice.
- Health-system pharmacy education.
- Health-system pharmacy administration.
- Pharmaceutical research or development related to health-system pharmacy.
- Pharmacy organizational activity, with a definite relationship to health-system pharmacy.
- Scientific or professional pharmaceutical writing, e.g., noteworthy published articles on pharmaceutical subjects with applicability to health-system pharmacy.
- Pharmaceutical journalism related to health-system pharmacy.
- Public and/or inter-professional relations activities benefiting health-system pharmacy.
- Pharmaceutical law or legislation, professional regulations, standards of professional conduct of pharmacy law enforcement, as related to health-system pharmacy practice.
Selection
Nominations will be received annually from:
- Selection Committee members.
- Past Presidents of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists
- Affiliated Chapters of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
- Any ten active members of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists
submitting and signing a recommendation.
Selection will be made by the following procedure:
1. Call for nominations, accompanied by a list of all past recipients of the Award, will be
sent by the Executive Vice President of the Society to officials representing Affiliated Chapters, and to all individuals eligible to submit nominations, at least nine months in advance of the Annual Meeting of the ASHP; or, if there are less than nine months between Annual Meeting dates, the call for nominations will be sent within thirty days after the last Annual Meeting. A similar notice in the American Journal of Health- System Pharmacy will be considered appropriate notification to individual ASHP members.
2. A deadline for receipt of nominations will be established by the Selection Committee Chairman, and will be included in the call for nominations.
3. Nominations will be sent to the chairman of the Selection Committee through the Executive Vice President of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. All nominations will include as complete a statement about the candidate as possible including accomplishments or contributions on which the recommendation is based, and the reasons for making the recommendation. All statements about the candidates should be specific. (i.e., Statements should not be made or accepted such as "his contributions are well known to all" or "his accomplishments are too numerous to mention.")
4. Within 15 days after the established deadline date, all nominations, with written statements about the candidates, will be sent to all Selection Committee members.
5. Selection Committee members will return ballots to the Chairman, indicating their first choice.
6. The candidate receiving a majority (more than half) of the votes from the members of the Committee eligible to vote, will be declared the Award Recipient.
7. If no candidate receives a majority of votes on the first ballot, names of the two receiving the highest number of votes will be recirculated and another vote taken. The candidate receiving a majority will be declared the recipient. (Note: Should there be a tie vote, the chairman of the committee shall be asked to cast the deciding vote.)
8. Failure to receive a vote from any committee member should be followed up by a reminder letter from the chairman to the member, and 14 days allowed to elapse before selection of the winner without the abstaining member's vote.
Selection Committee
The Committee for the selection of the Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award Recipient will be composed of all living past Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award recipients except any of such past recipients which may decline to serve. The chairman of the committee will be the most recent past recipient who shall not vote except to break tie ballots.
Outline of Personal Data for the Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award
To assist the H.A.K. Whitney Lecture Award Selection Committee to evaluate candidates proposed for the award, personal data must be provided in outline format as follows:
- BIOGRAPHICAL DATA
-Name, birthdate and place, dependents and any other significant facts.
- EDUCATION AND TRAINING
-Institutions, location, years attended and date, of graduation, type of training or major subjects, degrees and certificates (college and postgraduate only).
- PROFESSIONAL AND RELATED EXPERIENCE
-Institution or organization location, dates, type of work or position title.
- COMMUNITY AND CIVIC EXPERIENCE
-Positions of leadership and exceptional service to community or civic organizations.
- ORGANIZATIONAL MEMBERSHIPS
-Professional, honorary, service and social.
- PUBLICATIONS -List references.
- HONORS OR AWARDS RECEIVED
Additional information about the candidate is welcomed.
Award
The recipient is expected to present a lecture at the award banquet. Elements in the award package include:
- suitably engraved award plaque
- stipend of $2,000
- waiver of the registration fee
- (Note: The stipend of $2,000 is in lieu of reimbursing the recipient for travel and hotel expenses.)
ASHP EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT'S AWARD FOR COURAGEOUS SERVICE
ELIGIBILITY
The award may be granted at any time at the sole discretion of the ASHP Executive Vice President. The award is for specific incidents of inspiring, unselfish service, under adverse conditions, related to providing the services of health-system pharmacists, or assisting health-system pharmacists in providing services, to patients. The award may be given to health-system pharmacists or anyone else without regard to membership in ASHP. ASHP members, Board members, staff members, and others are welcome to nominate individuals for the award.
AWARD
The award consists of a framed certificate and is presented by the ASHP Executive Vice President in some public forum as deemed appropriate. The award does not include an honorarium or payment of travel expenses to accept the award.
ASHP AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP OF HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACY PRACTICE
Criteria
Nominees for the award must be:
- Licensed pharmacists in the United States.
- Individuals who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to advancing the level
- of pharmacy service and the status of the profession within a hospital or health system, as evidenced by (for
- example):
- a) Leading the development of a pharmacy program in which pharmacists have made significant advances in providing direct patient care services or in applying new science and technology to patient care.

- b) Leading the development of a pharmacy program that is exemplary in its comprehensive adherence to ASHP practice standards.
- c) Leading the training of a large number of pharmacy residents over a number of years who have assumed practice leadership positions in health-system pharmacy.
- Individuals whose leadership of pharmacy practice in a hospital or health system has been exceptional in the extent to which the pharmacy has "leapfrogged" previous levels of service or the state of practice in similar institutions.
Selection Process
- ASHP will call for nominations annually through its regular communication vehicles.
- Anyone may make a nomination anytime by writing the Executive Vice President, outlining how the
nominee meets the criteria for the award. (ASHP will develop a uniform application to facilitate the
nomination process.)
3. Selection of award recipients is by unanimous vote of the ASHP Board of Directors.
4. No more than two individuals may be selected to receive the award in one calendar year. There is no prescribed minimum frequency for presentation of the award.
Award Presentation
The award, consisting of an inscribed plaque, will be presented at the ASHP Annual Meeting or the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.
- 2. ASHP will pay the expenses of the recipient to travel to an ASHP meeting for purposes of receiving the
award, consistent with ASHP travel expense reimbursement policies.
3. The recipient may offer brief remarks upon acceptance of the award.
ASHP BOARD OF DIRECTORS DONALD E. FRANCKE MEDAL
Definition
This award will honor individuals who have made significant international contributions to
hospital system pharmacy.
Criteria and Procedures
The Board of Directors shall serve as the selection committee and may seek the advice of internationally recognized hospital pharmacists.
Unanimous affirmative vote.
Members of the Board of Directors may suggest nominees in writing with substantiated evidence for such nomination.
The Medal will be awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors but should not be
awarded annually.
5. The Medal may be presented to the recipient at the Annual Meeting, Midyear Clinical
Meeting, or other appropriate functions of the Society (excluding social functions).
6. The awarded shall consist of a suitable inscribed medal.
- The recipient will be expected to deliver a lecture on the occasion of the presentation of the
Medal.
8. The recipient shall be eligible to an honorarium equivalent to payment of the recipient's:
- Travel expenses to attend the Society's meeting.
- Hotel expenses not to exceed a five-day (5) period.
ASHP BOARD OF DIRECTORS AWARD OF HONOR
Definition
To honor individuals who are not hospital pharmacists but who have made significant contributions to the health field.
Criteria and Procedures
- The Board of Directors shall serve as the selection committee.
- Unanimous affirmative vote is required.
- 3. Members of the Board of Directors may suggest nominees in writing with substantiating
- evidence for such nomination.
- The award of Honor will be conferred at the discretion of the Board of Directors and may
- be awarded annually.
- The award of Honor may be presented to the recipient at the Annual Meeting, Annual
- Midyear clinical meeting, or the other appropriate functions of the Society.

- The Award of Honor shall consist of a suitably inscribed plaque.
- The Award of Honor Recipient shall be eligible to an honorarium equivalent to payment of
- the recipient's:

- Travel expenses to attend the Society's meeting.
- Hotel expenses for a two-day (2) period.
