The Partnership Center Newsletter

August 16, 2010

Dear Partners,

Last week, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the availability of up to $250 million in grants, made available by the Affordable Care Act, to support the establishment of approximately 350 New Access Points for the delivery of primary health care services for underserved and vulnerable populations. Faith-based and community-based organizations that meet health center funding requirements are eligible to compete for these funds. Applications are due November 17, 2010.

A new access point is a new full-time service delivery site that provides comprehensive primary and preventive health care services to medically underserved and vulnerable populations. The funds will be administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) at the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Mary Wakefield, Administrator of HRSA, said that “competitive applications will demonstrate a high level of need in the community, present a sound proposal to meet this need, and show that the organization is ready to quickly put their proposal to work.”

Please also see our Featured Update below on National Health Center week, which celebrates the important work community health centers do to meet the health care needs of over 20 million Americans and reduce health disparities in our communities.

As always, the latter section of our newsletter includes updated grants that faith-based and community non-profits can pursue. Remember that it’s always important to review the funding announcement thoroughly to ensure that the grant is one that is appropriate to your organization’s mission, size, and scope.

Featured Update – National Health Center Week

Last week HHS celebrated National Health Center Week, which recognizes America’s community health centers and the nurses, doctors, physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, and health care workers who serve over 20 million people across our nation. Community health centers play an essential role providing access to high-quality, comprehensive health care to medically vulnerable and underserved people in the United States, regardless of their ability to pay.

To learn more about the impact of community health centers, please visit the Health Resources and Services Administration’s “Health Centers” website, as well as this “Community Health Centers and the Affordable Care Act” fact sheet available at HealthCare.gov.

Please also see this webchat with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and other HHS officials and local health care leaders to learn about how the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act and the Affordable Care Act are helping deliver higher quality care to communities that have been underserved for years.
