The Partnership Center Newsletter

June 9, 2010

In This Issue:

Dear Partners,

In our most recent newsletter, we included links to a brochure that was mailed to all Medicare beneficiaries across the country. This brochure details the benefits and cost savings available to people with Medicare through the Affordable Care Act. The brochure is available on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services website in both English and Spanish.

As a leader in your community, you may be contacted by members or congregants who are Medicare beneficiaries and have questions about how health reform affects their benefits. We want to make sure you have the brochure and its key points at your fingertips in case you do get questions. We also want to ensure that you have the referral information for Medicare beneficiaries who have questions: 1-800-MEDICARE or www.medicare.gov. Our Featured Update below summarizes the key information in the brochure.

As always, please see the bottom section of our newsletter for an updated and expanded grants section with information regarding grants that faith-based and community non-profits are eligible to pursue. Remember that it's always important to review the grant solicitation in full to ensure that the grant is one that is appropriate to your organization's mission, size, and scope.

Sincerely,

Alexia Kelley, Director
Center for Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships
US Department of Health & Human Services

Featured Update

The brochure that was recently sent to Medicare beneficiaries addresses many questions they may have about how the Affordable Care Act affects their benefits. We want to make sure you have the same information that was sent to all beneficiaries, including those in your community. We hope this information will help alleviate any concerns Medicare beneficiaries have about the new law, since they may not be aware that the guaranteed Medicare benefits they currently receive will remain the same.

Here is a summary of the key information included in the brochure:

  • The Affordable Care Act contains important benefits, including a one-time tax-free rebate check of $250 if a Medicare beneficiary falls into the donut hole, or coverage gap, for prescription drug costs and isn't receiving Medicare Extra Help. Most Medicare drug plans have a coverage gap. This means that after beneficiaries and their plans have spent a certain amount of money for covered drugs, they have to pay all costs out-of-pocket for their drugs (up to a limit).
  • These rebate checks are now being mailed to beneficiaries. People with Medicare who have already hit the coverage gap should expect to receive their check within 45 days. If a beneficiary is enrolled in their State Pharmacy Assistance Program (SPAP), they are still eligible to receive the rebate.
  • Beginning January 1, 2011, beneficiaries will receive a 50% discount on Part D-covered brand-name prescription drugs when they are in the coverage gap.
  • Also beginning next year, a beneficiary can get free preventive care services like colorectal cancer screening and mammograms, as well as a free annual physical.
  • If someone who is eligible does not receive a rebate check or has additional questions, they should contact Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE or visit www.medicare.gov. TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048.

The brochure was designed both to educate beneficiaries and to protect them from potential scam artists and fraud by providing them with information about the new law. Very importantly, the brochure reminds beneficiaries to get information about Medicare from a trusted source. Reinforcing that message will help ensure that Medicare beneficiaries do not fall victim to unscrupulous individuals looking to take advantage of the current changes to perpetrate scams.

Thank you for all that you do to ensure that members of your community have accurate information about their Medicare benefits and the Affordable Care Act. The brochures are also available at www.medicare.gov; simply go to the section titled “What's New?” and click on “Medicare and the New Health Law - What It Means for You.”
