Health Care Personnel Initiative to Improve Influenza Vaccination Meeting

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) held a meeting on September 10, 2008, to discuss influenza vaccination rates amongst healthcare personnel (HCP). Approximately 30 organizations represented a variety of stakeholders including; but not limited to, vaccine industry, long term care associations, healthcare unions, and health professions school associations. Two thought leaders were invited to share a real world perspective on best practices to increase influenza rates. Dr. David Nace from the University of Pittsburgh and Ms. Mary Cooney, RN from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia gave presentations about how they increased their institutions’ HCP vaccination rates to over 80 percent. Additionally, Dr. Joxel Garcia, Assistant Secretary for Health, and Dr. Anand Parekh, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health (Science & Medicine), gave overviews of the Department’s efforts in increasing vaccination rates.
