Strategic Plan
By Sherry Glied, Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation

Over the last few decades, the Nation has made substantial advancements in ensuring the public health, safety, and well-being of the American people, but there is still more to be done. The draft HHS Strategic Plan Fiscal Years 2010–2015 describes the steps we will take to achieve our mission to enhance the health and well-being of Americans, by providing for effective health and human services, and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services. The draft Strategic Plan describes our strategic goals, objectives, and strategies, as well as performance measures we will use to track our progress.

I think the plan should include more goals to work at a policy level to eliminate the sale of tobacco in pharmacies across the nation.
The goals are nice broad statements; however, they should be connected with measurable indicators and outcomes statements so that progress can be monitored over time and revisions can be made as needed to ensure that the plan is successfully implemented. A strategic plan means nothing if it can't be measured...create a logic model, stick with it, and reduce waisteful spending!
These broad goals truly represent the mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and encompass its central functions. Yinka
I would like to see more of a family approach to health care. Also important to address caregiver as part of the process. The individual patient medical model does not work for many Americans. This belongs right up front in the first section. Other than the above, it looks excellent.
BROAD is correct. These plans are so broad in their recent data and 2015 goals,it would seem there is little accountability for achieving the outcomes. "TBD" does not give the American people much information.
I echo the comments of Barbara and the others noting no information or support for human milk/breast feeding is provided. Breastfeeding peer and professional support and access to breast pumps for mothers of preterm and sick infants is critical in our mother's ability to successfully breastfeed. Breastfeeding is the cornerstone for health and should be encouraged and supported.
