Upcoming Conference: June 15-18, 2010 – The National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL), Twelfth Annual International Fatherhood Conference.


In an effort to help grantees maintain a high level of training and knowledge, OAPP has identified additional training and technical assistance (TA) resources and materials that are relevant to AFL grantees and their partners. These external resources and materials are meant to supplement the technical assistance provided by OAPP to AFL grantees. These resources and materials are featured on this page and will be updated regularly, so be sure to check back often.

Please note that OAPP will not cover any costs associated with these resources and materials. The identification of these external resources is in no way an endorsement of these trainings or their parent organizations from OAPP or the Department of Health and Human Services. June 1–4, 2010 – The Society for Prevention Research, Eighteenth Annual Meeting "Cells to Society: Prevention at all Levels", Denver, CO: The Society for Prevention Research is a wellness–oriented society in which evidenced–based programs and policies are continuously applied to improve the health and well being of its citizens, fostering positive human development and citizens who lead productive lives, in caring relationships with others. This meeting provides a unique opportunity to advance their vision by providing a centrally integrated forum for the exchange of new concepts, methods, and results from prevention research and related public health fields; and by providing a forum for the communication between scientists, public policy leaders and practitioners concerning the implementation of evidence–based preventive interventions in all areas of public health.


June 2–4, 2010 – The Office of Planning Research and Evaluation, Thirteenth Annual Welfare Research and Evaluation Conference, Washington, DC: For more than a decade this conference has been a leading forum for welfare researchers and analysts, State and local administrators, and Federal officials and policymakers to discuss the latest findings in evaluations of welfare programs and policies, ways to incorporate findings into the design and implementation of programs and policies, and strategies for future evaluations. The 2010 conference once again will provide a forum for discussing expert and cutting–edge research on welfare programs and policies.


June 2–5, 2010 – The Sixth World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, Boston University and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) are hosting the 6th World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (WCBCT) in Boston, Massachusetts. The WCBCT is held every three years in various countries around the world. It provides an opportunity for cognitive and behavior researchers and clinicians from all corners of the globe to meet, discuss common problems, exchange ideas, and further develop the science of evidence based cognitive and behavioral treatments. The 2010 WCBCT will cover a range of diverse themes including: addictive disorders, aging, anxiety disorders, behavioral medicine, bipolar disorder, child and adolescent problems, basic processes (e.g., information processing, neuroimaging, neuropsychology), depression, developmental disabilities, issues of diversity (e.g., women and gender, cross–cultural, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender), eating disorders, marital and family relationships, OCD and related disorders, personality disorders and challenging behavior, psychosis, sexual problems, therapist training and supervision, trauma, therapy context and delivery, translational research and dissemination. June 10, 2010 – Health Care Education and Training (HCET), IN the Know: A Conversation about Best Practices to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and STIs in your Community, Indianapolis, IN: This event showcases successful examples from communities that are building a sense of public-will around reducing teen pregnancies and STIs among teens they know.

June 10–12, 2010Sixth International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision. This conference provides an opportunity for social workers, psychologists, nurses, marriage and family therapists, substance abuse counselors, counselor educators, speech therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation counselors, and other mental health professionals and educators to examine current issues in clinical supervision research and practice within and across professional disciplines. June 15–18, 2010 – The National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL), Twelfth Annual International Fatherhood Conference, New Orleans, LA: Attend the NPCL's 12th Annual Conference as they continue their mission of strengthening future generations of children by increasing the involvement of fathers and parents.


June 21–23, 2010 – The US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Research on Young Children and Families, Launching the Next Decade for Policy and Practice, Washington, DC: The conference focuses on identifying and disseminating new research relevant to young children (0–8 years) and their families while expanding dialogue and fostering partnerships among researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. The conference focuses especially on research relevant to the low–income families who are Head Start's population.


August 3-4, 2010 – The Grantsmanship Center, Essential Grant Skills, Chicago, IL: This Workshop provides an overview of the entire grants process, with in-depth emphasis on the key areas where even experienced grant professionals often stumble. October 26-29, 2010 – The Healthy Teen Network's 2010 Conference: A Time of Opportunity: Engaging Communities in Supporting Healthy Youth and Young Families, Austin, TX: This conference will review implementing evidence-based or innovative approaches to reducing teen pregnancy.

Online Training

ACT for Youth, Adolescent Identity Development, Through this online training, take a look at social and self-identity and identify examples of different stages and statuses in adolescent identity development.


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Writing Good Goals and SMART Objectives: This online tutorial provides information on formulating goals and SMART objectives to plan and describe programs.


Health Care Education and Training, Inc., What Works in Adolescent Sexual Health Programs: This online module is designed to empower nurses, health educators, clinicians and counselors to provide strategies for adolescent health programs that have been found effective in preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS.


The National Clearing House on Families and Youth, Introduction to Positive Youth Development Distance Learning Course: Created by the Family and Youth Services Bureau, this free distance learning course will familiarize participants with the theory and practice of this positive approach to working with young people.


The National Family Preservation Network, Online Father Involvement Course: This is the first of three trainings to be offered online about the important issue of Father Involvement.

Continuing Education Opportunities

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Inaugural Conference on Obesity Prevention and Control, The Weight of the Nation: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hosted their first ever annual conference on obesity prevention and control. Six of the sessions offer continuing education credits from the CDC's Training and Continuing Education Online System, find out more by visiting their website.


The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), WebEd: NASW WebEd is the venue for online course offerings developed and offered by the NASW National Office. NASW web courses are credited and social workers who pass the course exam will receive CEUs.


The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC), Continuing Education Credit Activities Page: Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) can earn continuing education contact hours (credits) by accessing any available trainings offered on this page.


The National Family Preservation Network (NFPN), Online Training Site for Father Involvement: In cooperation with Essential Learning, NFPN has converted the Basic and Advanced Fatherhood Training Curricula into three online courses. The courses include a full array of training on father involvement with 8 CEU credits available upon completion of all three courses.


The Resource Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (ReCAPP), Professional Credits Page: Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) and Certified Family Life Educators (CFLE) can earn continuing education contact hours (credits) through ReCAPP's professional education page.
