National Annual Grantee Conferences
OAPP hosts a national conference for its AFL grantees annually. AFL project directors and evaluators from each AFL demonstration project are expected to attend. Conferences are typically held in early December or January. The purpose of the conferences is: (1) to formally introduce grantees to Office of Public Health and Sciences' initiatives and OAPP's policies; (2) to equip and enhance AFL grantees' knowledge, skills, and abilities in areas relevant to the needs of their target populations, program management and evaluation methodology, analysis and outcomes; and (3) to provide a platform in which grantees can share their program and evaluation findings with others. Care grantees are provided the latest information on psychosocial and health issues affecting pregnant and parenting teens that will enhance service delivery to adolescents and their families. Prevention grantees are provided the latest information on psychosocial and health issues affecting adolescent pregnancy prevention and abstinence that will enhance service delivery to adolescents and their parents. By the end of the conference, grantees learn more effective intervention and evaluation techniques to improve their demonstration projects and the health and well-being of adolescents and their families. Attendees may earn social work continuing education credits (CEUs) for participation throughout the conference which requires attendees to sign in and out four times a day (morning and afternoon) throughout the conference. Also, certificates of completion may be given to attendees upon request.
The National Annual Care and Prevention Grantee Conference
December 8-10, 2008
Washington, D.C. metropolitan area
The Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs (OAPP) welcomes Adolescent Family Life (AFL) Care and Prevention grantees to the Washington, D.C area this year. As the conference theme, "The Essence of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program" suggests, this conference will focus on the underpinning elements of AFL Care and Prevention Programs. We hope you will capitalize on all of the learning opportunities we are planning for you. We look forward to our continuing grantees joining us in giving a warm greeting to the 6 prevention demonstration grantees that will be new to the AFL family. This conference will occur over 2 ½ days and will consist of plenary sessions which lay the foundation for educational workshop sessions to expound upon combining skill-building and educational instruction.
Conference Objectives
- To improve pregnancy, parenting and educational outcomes among youth served in AFL Care Demonstration projects;
- To increase knowledge and strategies which assist in delaying sexual initiation as well as reduce health related risk behaviours for youth in AFL Prevention Demonstration projects;
- To improve the capacity of AFL grantees to manage and evaluate AFL projects more effectively; and,
- To increase scientific knowledge of issues related to adolescent pregnancy through research and evaluation dissemination
As part of this year's conference, grantees will have opportunities to give presentations about their projects and lead workshop sessions. We expect this year's conference to be just as informative and thought-provoking as ever!
