Alanson Willcox served as General Counsel to the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare from 1961 to 1969.

Prior to becoming General Counsel to DHEW, Mr. Wilcox was General Counsel of the American Hospital Association. He was General Counsel to DHEW's forerunner,the Federal Security Agency (FSA) from 1947 to 1953 and was an Assistant General Counsel to FSA from 1942 to 1947. His other public service includes positions as the Assistant General Counsel at the Treasury Department, and an attorney at the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Mr. Wilcox served as a law clerk for the firm of Hughes, Schurman, Rounds and Dewight from 1926 to 1929 and as an attorney with Schurman, Wiley and Wilcox from 1929 to 1934.
