The links are no longer being updated. 1993.07.14 : Fogarty International Center Advisory Board Contact: Jim Bryant (301) 496-2075 July 14, 1993 The National Institutes of Health announced today that two new members have joined the advisory board of the Fogarty International Center, the agency's international arm. The new board members are Diana S. Natalicio, Ph.D., president of the University of Texas at El Paso, and Robert H. Glew, Ph.D., chairman of the department of biochemistry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. "We are pleased that Drs. Natalicio and Glew have agreed to serve on our advisory board," Philip E. Schambra, Ph.D., the center's director, said in announcing the appointments. "They possess specialized international experience that will be valuable in guiding the Fogarty center in the years ahead," he added. Both were appointed by then-HHS Secretary Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., and will serve under the current HHS Secretary, Donna E. Shalala. Dr. Natalicio will serve as one of three laymembers of the board; Dr. Glew will be one of nine scientific members. Dr. Natalicio has extensive international experience i the areas of mental health, psychology, language acquisition and bilingualism, and here administrative experience involves the accreditation of non-US. institutions, health science policy and resources for biomedical research. She received her bachelor's degree in Spanish from St. Louis university, a master's degree in Portuguese and, in 1969, a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Texas. She was a Fullbright scholar in Brazil and later a Gulbenkian Fellow in Portugal. She joined the linguistics faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso and later served as dean of liberal arts, vice president for academic affairs, and interim president of the university before being names its president in 1988. Dr. Glew has extensive international experience in biochemistry, nutrition and metabolic diseases. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts and his master's from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before receiving a doctorate in biochemistry in 1968 from the University of California at Davis. He did postdoctoral work at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore before joining the department of chemistry at the University of Louisville School of Medicine as an assistant professor. He then joined the department of biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh as associate professor and later professor. Dr. Glew was a visiting associate professor at the University of Benin Teaching hospital in Nigeria, and later was a visiting professor at the Usmanu Danfodio College of Medicine at the University of Sokoto, Nigeria. Since 1990, he has been chairman and professor at the School of Medicine's department of biochemistry at the University of New Mexico. The FIC Advisory Board advises the center about how its professional staff and fiscal resources can most effectively contribute to biomedical and behavioral research of international significance. The board also provides programmatic review for research awards supported by the center. NIH is one of eight agencies of the U.S. Public Health Services within the Department of Health and human Services.
