Kampala, Uganda

December 5, 2003

The U.S. Delegation visited several sites. The first was a trip to rural Uganda and the Toro Province, where they saw an HHS-funded, home-based program that delivers anti-retroviral AIDS drugs to persons who without the program would otherwise die. The program used motorcycles and drivers to deliver the drugs into areas inaccessible by car. The Delegation split up into groups to visit various homes throughout the region.

Secretary Thompson at his first home visit with Rosemary. Rosemary is raising her four children and the three children of her brother who died of AIDS, as did her husband. She lives on $70 per month.
