Daily HealthBeat Tip

Will diabetes win?

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

America’s heart disease rate has been falling. But its rate of diabetes, which can lead to heart disease, has been leaping upward.

Are we on a collision course?

A researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says yes. Jing Fang looked at diabetes-related deaths and illnesses in New York City.

Fang says in the journal Diabetes that heart attacks among New Yorkers with diabetes have been going up. She also says heart attacks among New Yorkers in general have leveled off instead of falling.

Fang says diabetes may end America’s progress against heart attacks. Her advice:

"Adopt healthy diet and exercise. While some medications may delay development of diabetes, diet and exercise work better." (11 seconds)
