HHS HealthBeat (April 30, 2014)

Tracking better health

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

A look at how Americans are doing in health shows some good things. The data are in an HHS progress report on the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators, which benchmark goals for improving Americans’ health.  Carter Blakey is lead for Healthy People 2020:

“We’re only one third of the way through the decade, but we’ve made progress in almost 54 percent of the indicators.”

For some objectives, the nation has already met or exceeded the goal. For instance, data from 2009 and 2012 show the number of children exposed to secondhand smoke dropped from 52 percent to 41 percent. The Healthy People target is 47 percent.

However, the fact that the target is 47 percent, not 100 percent, shows there’s room for improvement even in this goal.
