Emily Barson, Principal Deputy Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs
Emily Barson has served as the Principal Deputy Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services since August 2011. In this role, she works with the HHS regional directors and staff, as well as state, local, and tribal governments, to advance the priorities of the department, including implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Before joining the IEA team, Emily served as the Director of Scheduling and Advance for HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
Emily has a strong background in organizing, project management, and political strategy. Prior to her time at HHS, Emily worked in a variety of roles in the political and non-profit arenas, including at the Democratic National Committee and on congressional, statewide, and presidential campaigns.
Emily graduated from the George Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Communication. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband Matt Thornton.
