The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and HHS IDEA Lab are partnering to develop space located in the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. building to house an Innovation Lab that will bring together unique combinations of talent and capabilities to foster innovation and launch strategic initiatives.

Purpose of HHS Innovation Lab

HHS IDEA Lab’s portfolio of innovation pathways – HHS Entrepreneurs and HHS Ignite, HHS Ventures, HHS Competes, HHS Innovator-in-Residence – as well as various challenges and competitions launched by offices across HHS through HHS Competes need space to collaborate, brainstorm, and disseminate ideas. The success of similar facilities, such as the LAB @ OPM, further supports our belief that providing a ‘home’ for these programs will help underscore our objective of breaking down barriers to innovation and experimentation, and we seek to develop a physical space that embodies these principles to advance and enhance the strategic health initiatives of HHS.

BARDA’s Division of Analytic Decision Support (ADS) has requirements for a Visualization Hub to support the Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise (PHEMCE) data, modeling, and visualization projects for medical countermeasure (MCM) planning and response support. Other individuals and groups from the ASPR Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Office of Policy and Planning (OPP) have indicated a strong interest in developing projects that could benefit from an advanced computing, visualization, and collaboration capabilities based on the IT capabilities that BARDA ADS has proposed to develop.

Eligible Participants

The Lab’s capabilities will be made available to HHS employees, specifically participants in HHS IDEA Lab programs, offices looking to leverage BARDA/ADS’ capabilities in data modelling and visualization, as well as groups across the Department looking for collaboration space for a given project for a specific period of time. A Leadership team has been formed to oversee implementation of the Lab and will be defining the governance structure for how projects and teams will interact with the Lab in the coming weeks and months, so stay tuned for more details.
