Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN)As the nation embarks on the widespread deployment of EHRs, a key consideration will be the ability to exchange patient health information accurately and it a timely manner under stringent security, privacy, and other protections. On November 15, 2004 the Office of the National Coordinator Health Information Technology (ONC) released a Request for Information (RFI) that sought public comment regarding how widespread interoperability of health information technologies and health information exchange can be achieved through a Nationwide Health Information Network. By January 18, 2005, 512 organizations representing a cross-section of the industry as well as individuals submitted responses totaling nearly 5,000 pages of information. In order to leverage the technical and operational expertise across the federal government on health information technology, a federal government-wide RFI review task force (RTF) organized by the National Coordinator reviewed, analyzed and summarized the RFI responses into a report. More than 120 federal officials from over 17 departments and federal agencies participated in the RFI review task force to analyze the responses from the public-at-large and helped to develop a summary report on June 3, 2005.
On November 10, 2005, HHS announced the award of contracts totaling $18.6 million to four groups of health care and health information technology organizations to develop prototypes for a Nationwide Health Information Network architecture. Additional details are available in the November 10, 2005 HHS press release. In order to advance the development of a Nationwide Health Information Network, a series of "Nationwide Health Information Network Forums" will be held. The first forum will focus on functional requirements and be held on June 28-29 at the National Institute of Health's Natcher Conference Center in Bethesda, MD. Additional details are available on the Nationwide Health Information Network Functional Requirements Forum web page. |
