I Stopped Gambling With My Life: My #GetCovered Story

When my brother asked me if I had a regular doctor, I was stumped. Seeing a doctor just wasn’t an option for me.

Before the Affordable Care Act, I looked into getting health insurance, but couldn’t find anything under $400 a month because I had a pre-existing condition -- a car had hit me, shattering my right leg. After paying for student loans and setting up my videographer business, even the most basic health plan was out of the question, so I tried to avoid doctors.

Of course, being without insurance made me anxious, but what choice did I have?

After lunch with a friend one day, my heart rate suddenly shot up, I started sweating, and everything began spinning. My friend -- a volunteer firefighter -- thought I might be having a heart attack or stroke.  He took me to the emergency room, but I refused to go in – I waited in the parking lot for 20 minutes to see if the symptoms went away.

Fortunately, it was a false alarm. But at the age of 32, I literally gambled with my life because I worried about the cost of the ER!

Now I don’t have to worry about whether I can afford to see a doctor. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, I have the peace of mind and security that comes with quality health insurance that doesn’t bust my budget.

Enrolling through the Marketplace at HealthCare.gov was extremely easy.  I selected a plan with a reduced premium of only $65 a month.

Knowing I don’t have to worry about an illness becoming a financial disaster has allowed me to focus more on growing my business.

Open enrollment ends March 31st, and you might be surprised to find out just how affordable coverage can be. In fact, 6 out of 10 uninsured folks could qualify for plans for $100 or less a month. You have nothing to lose by checking out your options!

Get the same peace of mind and security that I have. Don’t delay. Visit HealthCare.gov today.
