From the Heart: My #GetCovered Story

Like any 18-year-old, I was excited to go away to college. I had no way of knowing that during my freshman year, I would suffer a stroke caused by a tumor in my heart. In one moment, I joined the millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions who had few or no affordable health insurance options.

I always dreamed of setting up my own business after graduation. But years later when I ventured out on my own, I became sick and my insurer dropped me. I ended up with $50,000 of unpaid medical bills and no health insurance.

My story, however, has a happy ending, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Being able to get health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace was a tremendous relief. I logged onto HealthCare.gov, which is working smoothly, talked to the folks at the 24/7 call center (1-800-318-2596), and found a plan that easily fit my budget and needs. It also provided great savings with my prescriptions: One $122 prescription cost me only $4!

And I no longer have to worry about getting dropped by my insurance company if I get sick again.

Now that I’m covered, I can focus on the things that are important to me—my dreams, my passions—and really just start to live life the way I had always hoped to. It’s a freedom that I haven’t experienced in a long time.

In fact, I recently got a job that provides health benefits. I truly believe that the Affordable Care Act and the Marketplace gave me the chance to regain my health and re-enter the workforce.

Don’t miss your opportunity to #GetCovered. Sign up today! Visit the Marketplace at HealthCare.gov or the Spanish language site CuidadoDeSalud.gov and get covered before open enrollment ends March 31.  Otherwise, you won’t be able to sign up until November, for coverage that begins next year.

The peace of mind that I got from reliable coverage was immeasurable.
