Because Everyone Deserves Options…
The Health Insurance Marketplace delivers new quality, affordable coverage to uninsured Americans.

For years, millions of Americans have been denied the security and peace of mind that comes with having health insurance. This has meant that far too many families have a story similar to the one Cathy shared with us:
“One of the happiest days of my life was the day my son Matthew was born. But for all the joy my husband I experience, there also was some pretty serious adversity. You see, my son was born with a heart defect which required cardiac surgery to save his life.
We soon learned, however, that like so many Americans, we were underinsured: we had coverage--it just didn’t really cover anything when it came to the care our son needed to save his life.
My husband and I maxed out our insurance policies to provide the care our son needed – and still it wasn’t enough. We were left with huge out of pocket costs. Our family pitched in, but we could never fully afford what he needed.
But doing nothing just wasn’t an option. You see, I’m a nurse but more importantly, I’m a mom, and I wasn’t going to allow financial obstacles to stand in the way of my son’s life. With no other options, we put his heart catherizations, echo cardiograms and doctors’ visits on our credit cards.
We always paid what we could, but those charges and mounting medical bills after years and years became more than we could ever repay in several life times, so we had to file bankruptcy.
I don’t believe that any family, in the greatest country on earth, should be forced into bankruptcy in order to save a child’s life.
Any mother out there can tell you, we never stop worrying about our kids.
As my son grew and went to college, he was about to lose his health insurance.
But because of the Affordable Care Act, he can now stay on our family plan until his 26th birthday – after which time, he’ll be able to buy affordable coverage on the Marketplace. And starting in January, no insurance company will ever be able to deny him coverage because of a pre-existing condition.
One more thing I should tell you: in a year and a half Matthew will graduate nursing school.”
Having to choose between bankruptcy or letting your child go without the life-saving treatment he needs is no choice at all. But thanks to the new health care coverage available at the Health Insurance Marketplace, every American has options.
The Health Insurance Marketplace is open for business and Americans across the nation are shopping for and enrolling in quality, affordable coverage. You have until December 15 to apply for coverage that starts January 1, 2014. Enrollment stays open until March 31, 2014.
There are a number of ways to shop for coverage in the Marketplace. You can call the call center at 1-800-318-2596 (TTY 1-855-889-4325), or use the Find Local Help feature on HealthCare.gov to find people in your community who are trained to help you understand your coverage options and enroll in a plan.
