On Target for Opening the New Health Insurance Marketplace

When open enrollment in the new Health Insurance Marketplace begins on October 1, millions of Americans will be able to shop for quality health care coverage that meets their needs and their budget.

Every health insurance plan in the new Marketplace will offer needed benefits, from doctor visits to medications to hospitalizations. Consumers will be able to compare insurance options based on price, quality, and other features in plain language that makes sense.

Starting at HealthCare.gov, individuals in every state will be able to find out if they can get a break on the cost of their monthly premiums, co-pays and deductibles. There will be in-person assistors who can help individuals navigate the Marketplace. Coverage will begin January 1, 2014.

We are on target for open enrollment, and looking forward to several key milestones over the coming months to accomplish this important task. This summer, our focus is on public education and training. We will be launching HealthCare.gov 2.0 with new information for consumers and opening a call center that will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week with more than 150 languages. We will announce more partnerships across the country to help get the word out.

Already, the Affordable Care Act has provided major new benefits in the form of vital preventive services at no out-of-pocket cost, discounted prescription drugs for seniors, the ability of young adults to get coverage through a parent’s plan, and innovations in coordinated care that are helping to hold down health care spending growth at historically low levels.

Now we’re moving forward with this next exciting phase. While there may be a bump here or there – which can be expected when you are creating a program of this magnitude – let there be no doubt: Every state will have a Marketplace up and running for open enrollment on October 1.

And through the Marketplace, millions more Americans – our families, friends and neighbors – will be able to get the peace of mind and security of health insurance that they deserve.
