Category Descriptions:

Community Development

HHS Community Development category grants provide assistance to states and local communities to plan and develop a broad range of activities to improve the health and well-being of their communities.  Examples of funded activities are to:

  • reduce poverty and empower low-income families and individuals to become self-sufficient;
  • support operation of rural health research centers and analysis of full range of rural health services issues;
  • provide technical assistance and services for research on healthcare costs, quality and outcomes;
  • ensure community health care delivery;
  • support the independence, productivity, and integration and inclusion into the community of individuals with developmental disabilities; and
  • support community-based programs for women's health.

Education

HHS Education category grants provide:

  • services and support for the disabled to enable integration and independence;
  • support social and cognitive development of low-income children (Head Start);
  • provide access to health education, including for abstinence, family planning, and mental health; and
  • support professional health career specialties, such as student loans, dental health care residency, and nursing work force.

Employment, Labor and Training

HHS Employment, Labor, and Training category grants provide:

  • job training and employment, including mental health services and AIDS clinical training;  
  • occupational safety and health training;
  • support Native American Programs to develop and implement social and economic strategies that promote self-sufficiency; and
  • community services to state and local communities.

Environment Quality

HHS Environment Quality category grants:

  • support research concerning environmental health;
  • provide Hazardous Waste Worker Health and Safety Training;
  • address Tribal public health issues and impacts due to environment;
  • regulate Tribal health environmental quality; and
  • support resource and manpower development in the Environmental Health Sciences.
Health

HHS Health category grants support a broad range of issues related to health including:

  • disease prevention, research, and treatment;
  • pharmaceutical development;
  • occupational health and safety;
  • health facilities development;
  • sustained research pertaining to alcohol, drug abuse, prevention and treatment; and
  • support for mental health initiatives.

Income Security and Social Services

HHS Income Security and Social Services category grants:

  • promote delivery of supportive services, including nutrition services to older Americans;
  • provide Medicare hospital insurance and Medicare supplementary medical insurance;
  • expand protection and advocacy for individuals with mental illness;
  • provide services for the disabled to enable integration and independence;
  • provide grants to states, territories, or tribes to assist needy families with children so that children can be cared for in their own homes;
  • reduce dependency by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage;
  • reduce and prevent out-of-wedlock pregnancies; and encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families.
