Description | Asthma is a prevalent chronic disease in the US that has been increasing in prevalence since 1980. Asthma is a key component of the Healthy People 2010 objectives. Eight of these objectives address asthma, each requiring surveillance data to monitor progress toward the HP2010 goals. The goal of this project is to increase the uniformity, availability and ease of accessibility of data related to respiratory diseases at both the national and local level through the following announcements: Program announcement #03022 - NAS Agreement Program announcement #03022 - BRFSS Continuation Cooperative Agreement CDC/NCEH's National Asthma Control Program (NACP) builds capacity for and supports asthma surveillance at the national and state levels. The Program analyzes and disseminates asthma surveillance data so that decision makers, public health practitioners, and others can use the information to identify trends, risk factors, and populations at risk, and to guide and evaluate asthma control efforts. A number of different data sets are needed to provide comprehensive surveillance at the national and local level. State and local area surveillance data are provided by the Behavioral Risk Factor System (BRFSS) for local prevalence data, the Health Care Utilization Program (HCUP) for local level hospitalization data, Medicaid/Medicare data for local level data specific to low-income populations, the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS), the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and death records from the National Vital Statistics System. |
