Volcanic Emissions and Airway Function, Inflammation, Heart Rhythm (AIR)

Program Title

Volcanic Emissions and Airway Function, Inflammation, Heart Rhythm (AIR)

Agency/Sub-Agency

CDC\CCEHIP\NCEH\DEHHE\APRHB

Description

The purpose of this project is to provide a scientific basis for the Hawaii DOH to advise the residents with respiratory ailments on the possible respiratory hazards associated with VOG, to provide a basis for development of intervention strategies to assist Hawaii residents with coping with VOG exposure, and to address the gaps in the current data base used for policy decisions on ambient air quality. The goal of the project is to reduce the burden of respiratory health effects on the residents of Hawaii.  The Hawaii DOH is examining data already collected for correlations between health status and indices of bio-aerosol exposure. The data include lung function and daily diary data for health status, and questionnaire data for indices of bio-aerosol exposure. The populations targeted for this project are children with asthma or asthma-like symptoms and working adults recruited for proximity to Kilauea volcano. This purpose of this Congressionally-directed project (Volcanic Emissions and Airway Function, Inflammation, Heart Rhythm [AIR]) is to explore the effects of volcanic air pollution ("VOG") on cardiopulmonary health. The populations targeted for this project are children with asthma or asthma-like symptoms and working adults that live in close proximity to the Kilauea volcano.
