PFIESTERIA

Program Title

PFIESTERIA

Agency/Sub-Agency

CDC\CCEHIP\NCEH\DEHHE\HSB

Description

Original congressional intent for Pfiesteria line item funds is to expand existing surveillance systems to include Pfiesteria, other harmful algal blooms (HABs), and marine toxins.  Addressing HABs is important in ensuring healthy communities and healthy travel and recreation, two of CDC’s goals.   Building on and expanding the previous work of this program will also address major climate change issues of waterborne disease and drinking water contamination.  This use of funding directly addresses requests not only from the state partners originally involved with the Pfiesteria program, but also from other states facing similar public health issues.  The use of funding as described below will allow CDC  to continue its leadership public health role in addressing the growing threat of HABs, while  enhancing and coordinating water contamination and waterborne disease activities across centers
