Acquisition Strategic Leaders Program (ASLP)

Program Summary

The Federal government faces the challenges of a changing environment. It needs executives who can provide strategic leadership and whose commitment to public policy administration transcends their commitment to an agency mission or individual profession.  To ensure mission success into the future, the government needs a diverse cadre of adaptable leaders who inspire, motivate, and guide others to produce tangible results, who mentor and challenge the workforce, and who demonstrate high standards of honesty, integrity, trust, openness, and respect.

The Office of Acquisition Workforce & Strategic Initiatives (OAWSI) leverages technology, provides innovative training solutions and implements industries best practices in all stages of workforce development to create a professional HHS acquisition workforce. To fulfill this goal, OAWSI has developed the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Acquisition Strategic Leaders Program (ASLP) as a key succession-planning tool to ensure the agency has diverse leaders to achieve mission success within the field of acquisition.

The program develops leaders by supporting a climate of continuous learning and improvement, promoting challenging work, and providing opportunities for innovation and creativity across organizational boundaries.  ASLP’s goal is to build commitment, provide tactics to balance short- and long-term strategic goals, and educate leaders how to better translate strategy into effective action.

Through scheduled workshops, HHS will guide leader development, strengthen organizational relationships, and fuel sustained success in the government’s changing environment.  The objectives of this program are:

  • Promoting Creativity and Innovation
  • Engaging in Strategic Planning
  • Creating a Culture of Collaborative Leaders

The ASLP intends to prepare leaders to assume higher and broader roles and responsibilities in the field of acquisition. While components of this program align with senior executive core criteria, successful completion does not guarantee a promotion or selection for such a position.
