2014 Acquisition Mentoring Program

Section 3: Mentor Program Process

Kick-Off - The first meeting will serve as a hybrid orientation and training event.  This meeting will help Mentor-Mentee’s understand the concept and process of mentoring. The session will include information on the goals, roles, responsibilities and support structures of the program. Participants will learn more about the ideal characteristics to look for in a prospective mentor or mentee. Participation will ensure that Mentor-Mentees have access to the necessary tools and resources for success.  Representatives from OAWSI and previous participants will also be in attendance to answer any program related questions.

Orientation/Training - Once the kick-off has concluded, Mentors-Mentees will remain for the training portion of the session, where they will:

  • Learn more about the logistics of the program;
  • Receive tips on problem solving;
  • Learn about the importance of confidentiality and ethics in mentoring;
  • Find out about program evaluations; and
  • Learn of outside resources where they may obtain more information on mentoring.

Throughout the program, Mentors and Mentees will be encouraged to participate in workshops and receive tools to help them maintain successful mentoring partnerships. 

The Mentor workshops will focus on:

  • Coaching and feedback (giving and receiving);
  • Addressing challenges (turning challenges into opportunities);
  • Breaking through barriers and clarifying assumptions;
  • Resolving conflicts; and
  • Gaining commitment.

The Mentees workshops will focus on:

  • Building and maintaining rapport;
  • Listening and communicating effectively;
  • Identifying developmental opportunities;
  • Problem solving; and
  • Career management.

Roles and Responsibilities -

Mentors will be required to:

  • Notify supervisor of program participation;
  • Attend orientation and all developmental workshops and activities throughout the program;
  • Complete the Mentoring Participation Agreement & Confidentiality Form;
  • Assist Mentee with the development and management of his/her Mentoring Action Plan;
  • Provide advice and information on professional, technical, and leadership development;
  • Act as a role model;
  • Support, advise, encourage and provide feedback to Mentee; and
  • Complete all program evaluations.

Mentees will be required to:

  • Notify supervisor of participation in the program;
  • Attend orientation and all developmental workshops and activities throughout the program;
  • Demonstrate commitment to the partnership and the desire to learn new skills and insights to grow professionally;
  • Accept coaching/feedback as well as provide feedback to Mentor;
  • Complete the Mentoring Participation Agreement & Confidentiality Form;
  • Identify strengths and areas for development;
  • Develop and maintain Mentoring Action Plan with Mentor’s assistance; and
  • Complete all program evaluations.
